The polysaccharide and triterpene constituents of Ganoderma lucidum (the best known medicinal mushroom known as Reishi) have shown, in recent studies conducted in animals and in vitro, to have a beneficial hepatic protection effect.

This mushroom has been widely used in the coadjuvant treatment of chronic hepatitis, of diverse etiologies. It is well tolerated and demonstrates activity against hepatitis B virus, in particular. It is also effective in fighting lesions in this organ, induced by chemicals and bacteria.

Its mechanism of action has not yet been fully clarified, however, there are some theories that seek to do it. The protection exerted on the liver by the active components present in Ganoderma lucidum may be achieved due to their high antioxidant power, the modulation they exert in the enzymatic activity, their antifibrotic and antiviral activity or their immunomodulating effect.

After many years of use in Traditional Medicine, scientific studies carried out ever since have reinforced and sought to explain this hepatoprotective action. Much remains to be discovered, but some investigators believe that by truly understanding the mechanism of action of this protection, we will pave the way to the discovery of new and innovative drugs. Given the current data, the intake of these mushrooms is a valid alternative, given the limited number of options used nowadays in the treatment of liver related diseases and their symptoms.
